Moving Instructions
Checklist for an ideal, organized move of your residence

Two months prior to Moving Day
- Start a file for all of your moving paperwork (e.g., estimates, receipts, new home offers and home paperwork, etc.)
- If you will use a mover, get estimates from moving companies.
- Choose a mover (or truck rental company).

Six weeks prior to Moving Day
- Obtain and fill out post office change-of-address cards
- Start using foods and cleaning supplies that cannot be moved, including frozen foods, bleach and aerosols.

Four weeks prior to Moving Day
- Schedule disconnection of all utility services at old home and connect them at the new home. Be sure to disconnect the day after you leave and connect the day before you arrive.
- If you are packing yourself, obtain packing materials and start packing items you won't need until after you arrive at your new home according to the room they will be in in your new home.
- Arrange for special transportation of pets and plants, if necessary.
- Make any travel plans necessary for the move (e.g., hotel bookings).
- Collect important records, including medical and dental, veterinary and school, legal and financial, birth certificates, passports and insurance documents.
- Begin to label packed boxes using labels coloured according to the room that the boxes are designated to be moved to in the new house.

Three weeks prior to Moving Day
- Properly dispose of items that cannot be moved, such as paints or other flammable liquids.
- Prepare Vehicle registration for transfer to new address

Two weeks prior to Moving Day
- Arrange for disposal of anything not sold already.
- Return any borrowed items (including library books) and retrieve any loaned items.
- Notify any creditors of your move.
- Pack a Moving Day kit.

One week prior to Moving Day
- Take animals to vet for vaccinations, if necessary.
- Ask the new occupants of your home or a neighbor to watch out for mail after you moveāand check in with them after two weeks, and again after a month.

One day prior to Moving Day
- Empty refrigerator and freezer into cooler.
- Defrost refrigerator and freezer, propping doors open.
- Pack a box of items that will be needed first at the new house. Clearly mark this box "Load Last."
- Confirm arrival time of moving van / truck.
- dismantle beds and pack bedding.
- Unplug all electronic appliances 24 hours in advance of a move, except plasma televisions, so that they will be at room temperature on moving day. This includes home computers, stereos, and audio/video equipment.

Moving Day
- If using a mover, be sure someone is at the old house or they have phone contact to answer questions.
- Note all utility meter readings.
- Check closets, cabinets, and storage lockers for any articles overlooked.
- Pack up your PC and other electrical equipment. Write down the serial numbers in your "Moving" file folder.

Delivery Day
- Line shelves and install child safety devices.
- Check belongings carefully and note on the inventory paperwork any damaged items.
- Supervise unloading and unpacking.

After Delivery Day
- Select an solicitor to discuss laws that pertain to that country, and/or city. Be sure to cover such matters as wills, transfers of property etc.
